Enhancing student engagement with a wireless BYOD environment

Products used

Founded in 1875, Doshisha University is one of Japan’s oldest and most prestigious private universities, known for its strong academic tradition and commitment to innovation in education. As the university approaches its 150th anniversary in 2025, it has undertaken a major initiative to modernize its learning environments.

Beginning in 2024, Doshisha started implementing wireless classroom infrastructure to support more flexible, student-centered teaching. At the heart of this transformation is the deployment of WolfVision Cynap systems, enabling seamless BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) collaboration across campus.

We spoke with university staff to learn why Cynap was selected, what operational benefits it brings, and how the system is contributing to more engaging, technology-enhanced learning experiences.

Four Key Reasons Why Cynap Was Chosen

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) has become increasingly common in today’s learning environments, allowing students to bring their personal devices into the classroom and actively participate in lessons. At Doshisha University, the Cynap Pure Mini has been widely adopted as a simple and effective solution for creating a wireless classroom environment.

The decision to implement Cynap Pure Mini was based on four main factors:

  • Seamless Multi-Platform Compatibility - No Apps or Dongles Required
Cynap supports native screen mirroring for all major operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Chrome OS. Students and instructors can connect using built-in OS functionality, without the need for additional apps or USB dongles.
  • Simultaneous Multi-Device Connection
Multiple devices can mirror content to the screen at the same time, eliminating the need for manual input switching and enabling more interactive, collaborative sessions.
  • Strong Security Architecture
Security was a key consideration for the university. Cynap systems are backed by a detailed white paper verifying their secure operation, providing peace of mind for IT administrators.
  • Centralized Management with Free Software
Using vSolution Link Pro, IT teams can centrally manage multiple Cynap devices from a single PC - streamlining system monitoring and updates across campus.

The system provides extremely stable performance when mirroring, and beyond simply removing cables and decluttering the instructor’s desk, it allows faculty to move freely around the classroom without being tied to the lectern - which I believe is the greatest benefit.

Information Systems Division, Office of IT Planning - Doshisha University

Mr. Yamakita from the Information Systems Division, Office of IT Planning at Doshisha University explains:

“Since last year, we’ve been deploying Cynap Pure Mini systems across classrooms of all sizes. One of the biggest advantages is the compact form factor, which eliminates concerns about installation space. The system provides extremely stable performance when mirroring, and beyond simply removing cables and decluttering the instructor’s desk, it allows faculty to move freely around the classroom without being tied to the lectern—which I believe is the greatest benefit.

Up to four devices can connect simultaneously, enabling students to mirror content from their own devices. We see great potential for using Cynap in student-centered classes such as presentations and group work.

In some rooms, we’ve even implemented external control systems so that instructors can manage the four-screen split view without needing the remote control. While the devices are not yet connected to the campus network, we are considering this for the future. Features like remote power control and firmware updates via the vSolution Link Pro management software are also very appealing, especially for managing multiple devices efficiently.”
